Which study areas are affiliated to the Information Centre?
Information Centre is a department that operates following study areas in the basement of building A:
- information centre
- study room
- journals reading room

What do I have to do to be allowed to use the services of the Information Centre?
Entry into the Information Center study areas is possible only with a valid reader's card (ISIC, ITIC card or employee card). In the first year of each degree program (bachelor's, master's and doctoral), the reader pays a fee 120, - CZK. The cards are activated for free to all employees. The reader's fee can be paid also in the study room or in the library. After paying the fee, you can take full advantage of our services, i.e. access to study areas, access to computers and the Internet including databases, lending books here, in Brno and Lednice Library. up
How can I log in to the computer in the Information Centre?
Log in to computers in the study rooms of the Information Center is authorized, use the login name and password that you received at registration. up
What should I do if I lost or forgot my password for access to computer?
Forgotten password for access to computers in study areas of the Information Center will be notified by the system integrator of your faculty. You can find the list of system integrators on the web sites UIS. up
My ISIC card does not work. Probably it is damaged. What should I do?
If you have broken or otherwise damaged ISIC card (it does not work at turnstiles and sensors at copy machines), they will replace it in the study department of your faculty. The same procedure follows also if the card is lost. up
What does it mean when books or textbooks are intended only for on-site borrowing?
On-site borrowing means that the book or textbook can not be borrowed home. These publications must remain in the place for study, copy, or scanning for other students. The opposite is the off-site borrowing when you can borrow the book home. Textbooks designed only for on-site borrowing in the study room are marked with orange ring. up
Is there any exception when I can borrow the book or textbooks intended for on-site borrowing for home study?
Yes, we will lend you the fund dedicated to present loans (on-site borrowing) home for weekend. These are all the books in the information centre and the textbooks in the study room marked with orange ring. These loans are made on Friday, in IC from 5 p.m. Titles borrowed must be returned on following Monday in one hour after opening (i.e. till 9 a.m.). The fine to pay for the excess of loan period is 500, - CZK / loan. up
For how long it is possible to borrow books and textbooks?
In the study room the textbooks are loaned for the period of 7 calendar days. In the library you can borrow books for one month, textbooks for the whole semester. The books in the information centre are available only on-site. The exception is only absence loans during weekends. Look at the query before. up
What is the fine in case of late book return?
The fine for the late book return from the study room is 20,- CZK/day/loan, for the books from library it is 5,- CZK/day/loan. In case of the loans from the on-site fund during weekend, the late book return fine is 500,-CZK for the loan. up
Can I return a book without the ISIC card or instead of my friend?
Yes, it is possible to return lent books even without ISIC card, as well as you can return books instead of your class mates. up
What should I do if I need to return a book and the library is already closed?
In case you need to return book when the library or study rooms are closed, you can use the bibliobox which is situated in the corridor in the basement of building A in front of the library. You only put the books into the signed opening and we will take it the following day and will write them off your account in automated loan system. You can check out the write offs of the loans in online catalogue. up
Can I extend the loan of books and textbooks?
The extension of the loan depends on how much is the title requested. In case, when the title is lent and there is no other exemplar for lending, it is not possible to extend the period of the loan. It is not possible to do the extension on-line, it is necessary to contact service desk if the book or textbook can be loaned again. up
I did not find the book that was recommended by our lecturer. Is it possible to file a proposal to buy the books?
Yes, it is possible. We will welcome your proposals to buy the books. You can give your requests to the employees of the study rooms or libraries, or fill the web form. up
Where can I find Bachelor and Master theses from the past years?
It is possible to find Bachelor and Master diploma theses in online catalogue (by searching limit the query in the field Fond on Diploma Theses) or in the lists that are available at the service desk in the study room. In the study room, there are the Bachelor and Master theses of Faculty of Agronomy and Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology from the last two years, and theses of Faculty of Business and Economics from the last year. The Bachelor and Master theses since 1986 from the Faculty of Horticulture are saved in the library in Lednice. Older theses are saved in the library or in University Archive (you can find the information about location of a concrete thesis in collective catalogue, or the service will help you). There are also the dissertation theses available in the library. The rule for all university qualification works is that it is not possible to borrow them home or out of the study rooms. up
Can I borrow a journal from the reading room home?
Sorry, you cannot. We do not lend the magazines from reading room home. However, you can scan or copy articles from them. Also, you can check the Internet if you find the electronic version of the magazine - see the query "Where can I find electronic journals?". up
Where can I print/copy/scan and how much does it cost? Black and white and color print and copy are provided by self service printers/copy machines RICOH (these are the multi functional devices on which you can also copy and print). It is necessary to have some money saved in the ISIC card to print and copy. It is possible to recharge the credit at the service desk in the study room and in the information centre or through coin automat in the corridor in front of the IC. Black and white print and copying costs 1,50 CZK/A4 and 3,- CZK/A3. Color print is available in the study room A (to format A4) and in the information centre (to format A3). The price is 7,- CZK/A4 and 14,- CZK/A3. Color copying is possible in the information centre, the prices are the same as the color prints. Scanning is possible in all study areas (there is a scanner to the A3 format in study room in A, in other study rooms there is only format A4), scanning is a self service and cost free. zpět
Is double-side print possible? The double-side print is possible, through: Print - Property - Setting - Duplex - Left lateral restraint. up
Is it possible to print more pages on one sheet? Print of more pages on one sheet: Print - Property - Layout - 2 pages on a sheet (or more). up
Can I send the materials for printing from my notebook to school printers? This service is possible. But first you must install printer drivers and authentication application. This service is possible only for Windows OS. Ask staff for guide. up
I sent a file for printing but it did not print. Why? There can be more reasons:
1) Insufficient credit.
2) The user logged on the PC and the user putting the ISIC card to the code reader at the printer are not the same person.
3) The file is too big (pdf, too many pictures...) - wait, the process can take a while.
4) Blocked paper or empty paper tank announce the defect at the service desk.
5) The document was not saved right in the computer disc (it is not recommended to print the documents right from the USB stick or from the mail attachments). up
Can I take back the money saved in the ISIC card for printing and copying? Yes, you can. You can take the credit saved in the ISIC card back at the charging place in the information centre. But keep in mind, that you must withdraw your money from card before you end your study course (the state final examination day) - account is deleted after that day, and there is nothing we can do.
Can I use the money saved in the ISIC card at the canteen for printing and/or copying? Unfortunately, you cannot. The money put in the ISIC Card in the canteen are not available to use for printing and copying. up
I forgot my ISIC card, can I still print or copy something?
It is necessary to have your own ISIC card to print a document. You send the printing order from the computer you are logged in under your profile and so the person logged in to the computer must correspond with the person who is putting the ISIC card to the printer's bar code reader. Thus, the printer can identify your document to be printed. It is possible to copy without your own ISIC card. You just need to ask for special universal card at the service desk. up
What exactly should I imagine under the word database?
Databases (or electronic information resources) are data files in electronic form. They are divided by sort and content, but we can say that the databases collect information about magazines, articles, collections, books, or other documents. Some of them access their full texts, some only the bibliographical data or statistical and factual data. Some databases are freely accessible on the Internet, however, most of them are paid resources. It is necessary to choose the right according to what we concretely need to find. up
Where can I find out on which databases our University has access to?
The list of all databases to which our University has an access is to be found on the web sites of the Information Centre under the link Electronic information resources. For faster orientation in the field focus, the databases are signed by icons (natural sciences) a (social sciences). up
Where can I find electronic journals?
The guide Electronic journals library will help you with searching for the electronic magazines. In this digital library you can find all magazines to which our University has an access, and also that journals which are freely available on Internet. Can I use the databases also from home?
Yes you can, databases that are pre-paid by our University could be used by our students and employees also from home. So-called distant access through proxy server serves to enable it. You can find the instructions to connect to proxy server on the address http://proxy.mendelu.cz. There is also possibility to user VPN connection. up
Who will help me with orientation in databases
We know that the work with databases is not easy from the beginning. Our University bids up many of them and it is not easy to choose the right one. Therefore, we offer you, except mass trainings also individual consultations. During these consultations we will help you to find information you need. Interlibrary loan service and search/retrieval services - what kind of services are they? Interlibrary loan service (ILL) provides book loans and acquisition of books and copy of articles from the Czech Republic and abroad, if they are not in the funds of Mendel University in Brno or Moravska zemska knihovna in Brno. For the ILL applicants from other organizations we provide book loans or copies of articles from magazines which are not in the funds of Mendel University in Brno. The Search/retrieval services consist in searching documents or information on some topic in specialized databases. up
Who can ask for the interlibrary loan service and search services?
We provide Interlibrary loan service (ILL) and searches for scientific and educational workers and students of post gradual study at Mendel University in Brno. The searches are provided cost free, the fees for the ILL are solved operatively: charges for the inner state ILL are paid by the Information Centre, higher charges for the international ILL we usually invoice to particular departments of Mendel University. up
How can I give the request for the interlibrary loan service?
The interlibrary loan service order form for employees and doctoral students at Mendel University in Brno is available here. How can I ask for the search elaboration?
It is possible to order the searches from databases personally at search department (Bc. Ing. Jana Kratochvílová), via e-mail (kratoch@mendelu.cz) or by filling the html form.

Names of already made searches are summarized in the online catalogue (by searching limit the demand in the field Fond to Searches), and it is possible to ask for their copies in the search department. up
How can I install Wi-Fi, who can help me with it if I am not successful?
Detailed instructions for installing a wireless connection, according to which in most cases it is possible to install the network, are available at study areas service. Instructions can also be found here. If your installation fails, contact the service that will help you or if your problem is more complicated they will refer you to the experts. up
Where can I bind my seminar paper?
You can find the ring binding machine in study room. The study room service sells the material for binding ( ring back, front foil, back cartoon) for 10 CZK. The machine is self service.
You can also use the services of Publishing Centre in the basement of building Q. Except the ring binding, the Publication Centre does also paperbacks, thermo backs, fastback, sewing, back bordering. ATTENTION: it does not provide bindings of Bachelor and Master diploma theses. The Publication Centre opening hours are: MO - FRI: 8 - 12 am, 12:30 -- 2 pm. up
Where can I buy textbooks?
You can buy the textbooks published at our University in Publishing Centre (basement of the building Q). You can find the actual list of books including their prices here. up
