Dějiny MZLU v Brně v datech 1919-2009

In 1919

The University of Agriculture in Brno (VŠZ) was founded as a Czechoslovak state-administered university, consisting of the Agricultural Section and the Forestry Section. Most professors from Zemská hospodářská akademie v Táboře came over to Brno.

VŠZ seated in the building of Zemský ústav nevidomých on Zemědělská street no. 1 in Brno - Černá Pole. It accommodated institutes of the Agricultural Section.

First board of professors of VŠZ was set up and academic officials elected. Prof. PhDr. František Bubák was elected the first Rector of VŠZ.

On 18 November 1919 first lectures in academic year 1919/1920 were launched at VŠZ. Only the Agricultural Section was opened, the Forestry Section remained temporarily under the Department of Agriculture of Czech Technical University in Prague. President of the Czechoslovak Republic, T.G.Masaryk, sent a letter of congratulation as to opening of the new university.

Spolek posluchačů Hospodářské akademie v Táboře was transformed into Spolek posluchačů zemědělského inženýrství na Vysoké škole zemědělské v Brně. It resumed its activities after the war, in 1952 it was officially dissolved.

In 1920

Central library and reading room for VŠZ professors were established.

Forestry Section of VŠZ was ceremonially opened following difficulties with its relocation to Brno.

Seat of Spolek posluchačů lesního inženýrství was relocted from Prague to Brno. After war Spolek was reestablished, dissolved in 1952.

Spolek asistentů Vysoké školy zemědělské v Brně was constituted as a branch of Spolek asistentů českých vysokých škol brněnských v Brně.

Zemědělský sbor posluchačů Vysoké školy zemědělské v Brně was founded as a platform for both faculties' student societies. Ceased to exist in 1925.

In 1921

Podpůrný fond pro posluchače VŠZ was established. Financial grant provided by Zemědělská jednota v Brně was the foundation for the catering fund for underprivileged students. Until then students had eaten their meals mostly in restaurants; from 1920 they could eat in Akademická menza českých vysokých škol. Representatives of universities were elected to the canteen board 

Lectorate of Physical Education and Commission for Physical Education were established at VŠZ. In 1939 Lectorate at Czech universities under Masaryk University in Brno was responsible for physical education at VŠZ.  After the war Lectorate was substituted with Ústav pro tělesnou výchovu při vysokých školách v Brně .

Forestry Section and Agricultural Section of Český ústřední spolek učitelů vysokoškolských v Brně were constituted.

In 1922

VŠZ struggles to survive, fighting the tendecies to dissolve the university or to relocate the Forestry Section to Slovakia (1921 - 1924).

Biologická stanice českých vysokých škol v Lednici was constituted as a shared research biological station for universities in Brno (University of Agriculture, Veterinary University, Faculty of Natural Sciences and Medical Faculty of Masaryk University). Founder of Biologická stanice was Professor Emil Bayer. Since 1951 it has been in keeping of VŠZ.

Construction of second building of VŠZ  on Zemědělská street no. 3 in Brno; it accommodated institutes of the Forestry Section (1922 - 1924).

Experimental fields were formed on the premises of VŠZ in Brno - Černá pole. 

Branch of Klub československých zemědělských inženýrů pro Moravu a Slezsko was founded in Brno to support the intersts of the VŠZ alumni. 

In 1923

For the needs of the Forestry Section, VŠZ was allocated forest estate Školní lesní statek in Adamov, from 1931 it has borne the name of Školní lesní statek "Masarykův les". The forest estate also included state timber mill.

Státní ústav pro výzkum a zkoušení hospodářských strojů při VŠZ. Prof. Ing. Josef Černý appointed the first director. In 1951 the institute was dissolved. 

In 1924

First issue of non-periodical collection of academic essays at VŠZ titled Sborník Vysoké školy zemědělské v Brně, consisting of two series (press mark C - agriculture, press mark D - forestry). In 1946 it was renamed to Sborník Vysoké školy zemědělské v Brně, Acta Universitatis agriculturae et silviculturae Brno. Since 1950 it has been published on regular basis. Between 1953 - 1994 it was published 4 times a year in faculty series. 

President of the Czechoslovak Republic, Prof. T.G.Masaryk, visited VŠZ.

In 1925

For the needs of the Agricultural Section, VŠZ was allocated an agricultural enterprise Školní zemědělský závod in Žabčice.

In 1926

Botanical garden on the premises of VŠZ - Černá Pole was completed (1920-1926). In 1930 cold frame greenhouse was built in the garden.

To celebrate President Masaryk's 75th birthday the academic community of VŠZ established the foundation "Masarykova základina". During the WW2 the Nazis confiscated the foundation. After the war it was not re-established.

In 1927

Agrometeorological station was opened at Školní zemědělský závod in Žabčice.

Prof. August Bayer initiated the construction of Arboretum in Křtiny at  Školní lesní statek in Adamov (1927 - 1931).

In 1929

In memory of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Forestry Section at VŠZ the interest group of forestry alumni instituted the foudation "Základina Prof. Ing. Dr. Rudolfa Haše na Vysoké škole zemědělské v Brně". In 1942 during the Heidrich affair the German occupants confiscated the foundation and after the war it was not restored.

In 1930, 1931

Struggle to sustain the university integrity, protests against the parlamentary committee's "economical" proposal to dissolve VŠZ.

In 1932

Sdružení lesních inženýrů - absolventů Vysoké školy zemědělské v Brně was set up to secure co-operation beween the university and its alumni.

In 1934 - 1935

VŠZ acquired its first insignia. Proceeds from public collection were used to have golden rector's chain and silver deans' chains made.

In 1939 - 1945

On 17 November 1939, Czech universities closed in Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, occupation of VŠZ by the German military forces. VŠZ was placed under the German commissioner administration. Building on Zemědělská street no. 1 was re-opened on 20 November 1939, building on Zemědělská street no. 3 remained occupied by the SS forces until 9 December 1939.

While the occupation lasted VŠZ operated under the bilingual name Landwirschafliche Hochschule in Brünn - Vysoká škola zemědělská v Brně. Out of the original 26 institutes only 17 continued their research activities during the WW2, 9 institutes remained closed. 

In 1941

Building of VŠZ on Zemědělská street no. 1 was vacated to be used by the Nazi police forces. Institutes were relocated to building on Zemědělská street no. 3 and to buildings kept by the Veterinary University in Brno and the Czech Technical University in Brno.

In 1945

At the end of June VŠZ was opened to students. At the end of August first post-war graduation ceremonies of engineers and doctors of technical sciences were held. In November lectures were opened at the Agricultural and Forestry Sections of VŠZ.

Hidden insignia of VŠZ were ceremonially restored, including new collection produced between 1938 -1939. Insignia were given to the university by Brnosvaz and Moragro, the Moravian headquarters of České zemědělské družstevnictví.  

Reconstruction of buildings and completion of the interiors of the Agricultural and Forestry Sections damaged during the WW2 (1945-1948).

In 1946

University dormitory in Brno - Černá Pole on Zemědělská street no. 5 was opened in 1945. In 1946 it was renamed to Bayer dormitory, in memory of RNDr. Augustin Bayer, professor at the Faculty of Forestry tortured to death by the Nazis. 

Commemoration ceremony for the VŠZ officials tortured to death or executed during the WW2 was held. Honorary doctorates, degrees of Doctor of Technical Sciences and MSc. awarded in memoriam. In the lobby of the VŠZ main building memorial tablet and stained glass in windows were installed in their memory.

In 1947

Agricultural Section at VŠZ was divided in two study specializations - Agriculture and newly-opened Wine-growing and Horticulture. Study specializations opened from the 3rd year of study. Attempt to set up Faculty of Horticulture (wine-growing and horticulture) in Lednice, nevertheless, failed.

Restoration of apiary. In 2002 new apiary was installed, the old one was dismantled.

In 1948

February 1948 (communist upheaval) at VŠZ.

Ceremonial opening of new academic year 1948/1949.

University canteen opened at VŠZ. Students' canteen opened at Bayer dormitory. In 1950 university staff canteen was built on the university premises.

In 1949

Two-semester post-graduate qualifying courses were opened for graduates from VŠZ and Veterinary University - Fishery and Hydrobiology, and Animal Production.

Compulsory education in policitical science was introduced at universities. Lectorate of Social Sciences transformed into Institute of Social Sciences at VŠZ. From 1950 renamed to Department of Marxism and Leninism.

Readership trainig for students at Školní zemědělský závod in Žabčice. From 1952 known under the name of Institute of Practical Training at VŠZ. In 1960 independent institutes with the same attributes constituted at the individual faculties. Institutes dissolved in 1992. 

University committee and faculty committees of Československý svaz mládeže (ČSM) founded at VŠZ. ČSM ceased to exist in 1968.

In 1950

Reform of university study of agriculture and forest engineering.

New faculties and departments were formed at VŠZ. Faculty of Agriculture consisted of 7 departments and Faculty of Forestry comprised 6 departments. Boards of professors dissolved and VŠZ Council and faculty councils were set up instead.

Specializing pre-gradual study was introduced. At the Faculty of Agriculture new specializations were formed - Agronomy, Technology, Horticulture and Wine-growing, and Animal Production.

At the Faculty of Forestry the following specializations were opened - Economics, Wood Technology and Timber Management, Cultivation,  Machinery and Technology of Exploitation.

The attic in VŠZ building on Zemědělská street was rebuilt into temporary dormitory (1950-1952).

In 1951

Institute of Social Sciences and Institute of Legal Sciences closed.

In order to secure training for students of agriculture some departments of VŠZ assumed patronage over certain United Agricultural Co-operatives (JZD). In 1951advisory bureau Poradna pro JZD při VŠZ was established. In 1953 the bureau became part of the Department of Economics at the Faculty of Animal Production.

All activities of Prozatímní správa studentského majetku kolejí a menz vysokých škol v Brně ceased. Faculty commissions for accommodation and catering, and Dormitory and Canteens Administration Office at VŠZ were constituted. Between 1956 - 1963 students canteens were under the management of the state-governed organization Restaurace a jídelny.

University farm Zahradnický závod brněnské VŠZ in Lednice was founded with branch in Olomučany.

Military training was introduced at VŠZ. Military Department was formed; dissolved in 1990.

From the academic year of 1951/1952 compulsory course of Russion language iwas ntroduced at VŠZ.

University fur farm was set up in Brno - Královo Pole.

VŠZ changed its name to University of Agriculture and Forestry in Brno. Following re-organization in 1952 its original name was restored.

In 1952

Distribution of graduates from universities to companies was based on work admittance. Revoked in 1966.

Reorganization of VŠZ due to changes in study system at agricultural and veterinary universities focused on needs of the socialistic mass production. 

Veterinary University in Brno was closed and became part of VŠZ as Veterinary Faculty.

Faculty of Forestry separated from VŠZ and was transferred to Vysoká škola stavitelská v Brně.

Faculty of Agriculture was divided in Faculty of Agronomy and Faculty of Animal Production.

New study specializations were formed at VŠZ. Faculty of Agronomy opened the following specializations: Feed Science and Horticulture and Fruit Production. Feed Science specialization closed in 1953.

Technology specialization was relocated from VŠZ to Faculty of Food Technology at University of Chemical Sciences in Prague.

Department of Horticulture was moved from Brno to Lednice na Moravě. Students were accommodated at a temporary dormitory.

Department of Physical Education was reorganized into Institute for Physical Education.

Ethnic chorus at VŠZ "Javorina" was established. Ceased to exist in 1993.

Museum of Hunting in Lednice na Moravě was founded thanks to VŠZ and Myslivecká jednota v Praze (1952 - 1955). In 1960 it was handed over to ČSAZV.

In 1953

VŠZ was withdrawn from the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, Sciences and Art and transferred under the Ministry of Agriculture.

Student association Studentská vědecká společnost at VŠZ was formed.

Fishery specialization was constituted at the Faculty of Animal Production. In 1958 it was incorporated in to the 3rd year of the Animal Production field of study.

Agricultural and Forest Meliorations specialization was constituted at the Faculty of Forestry; dissolved in 1960. Last graduates in 1964. Gradual  dissolution of some specializations. New specializations - Forest Exploitation and Constructions and Forest Management - in 1954 merged to constitute new specialization - Forest Engineering.

Student canteen was opened in VŠZ complex.

5-year distant form of study opened at Faculty of Agronomy and Faculty of Animal Production of VŠZ. Institute for Distant Study formed at VŠZ with two consultation offices - in Brno for VŠZ in Prague and in Prague for VŠZ in Brno. In 1961 - 1962 offices ceased to exist.

In 1954

One year school 1. celostátní jednoletá škola předsedů JZD at VŠZ, managed by the Faculty of Agronomy, was opened. In 1956 it was transferred in the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and Silviculture.

University Department of Languages was established. In 1953 Language Institute was dissolved into language sections at the faculties, year later the sections merged to form Department of Languages.

In 1955

4-year study at the Faculty of Agronomy and the Faculty of Animal Production was extended to 5 years, study at the Veterinary Faculty of VŠZ was extended by one semester.

In 1956

Reorganisation of agricultural universities:

Agricultural universities transferred back in the authority of the Ministry of Education.

Faculty of Forestry was withdrawn from the group of faculties at Vysoká škola stavitelství v Brně and incorporated into VŠZ.

VŠZ was renamed to University of Agriculture and Forestry in Brno.

Research laboratory Laboratoř stanovištního výzkumu lesa was established at the Faculty of Forestry run by Prof. RNDr. Ing. Alois Zlatník. Since 1959 known as Research Laboratory of Biocenology and Forest Typology.

In 1957

Dormitory of VŠZ was opened in Jan Babák street in Brno, since 1962 under the name of Taufer dormitory.

Research centre Pracoviště vsádkování rostlin was constituted at the Faculty of Agronomy, since 1959 part of the Department of Vegetable Production. In 1964 Department closed.

In 1959

Reorganisation of VŠZ.

Faculty of Agronomy and Faculty of Animal Production merged to form new Faculty of Agronomy with two fields of study: Agronomy and Animal Production. Horticulture specialization was founded as part of the Agronomy field of study.

Faculty of Business and Economics was constituted at VŠZ.

University of Agriculture and Forestry in Brno restored its original name of University of Agriculture in Brno.

Manufacturing Centre of Teaching Aids was established at the Faculty of Agronomy. Between 1971 - 1980 under the name of Manufacturing Studio of Teaching Aids became part of Department of Pedagogy. In 1980 renamed to Art Studio and was part of the Dean's Office, in 1999 incorporated to Audiovisual Centre. 

In 1960

Changes in fields of study at VŠZ.

Agricultural and Forest Meliorations specialization at the Faculty of Forestry was closed. Last graduates in academic year 1963/1964.

New field of study was opened at the Faculty of Agronomy - Meliorations. Closed in 1975. Last graduates in academic year 1979/1980.

New field of study was opened at the Faculty of Business and Economics - Management and Economy of Agricultural Production. Discontinued in 1992, last graduates in academic year 1994/1995.

Three-year study was opened at the Faculty of Business and Economics, closed in 1966, last graduates in academic year 1967/1968.

Three-year distant study of selected forestry courses was opened at the Faculty of Forestry. Last graduates in academic year 1965/1966.

Six-semester wood technology courses were opened at the Faculty of Forestry. Last course run in academic year 1964/1965.

Two-year study of selected courses was opened at the Faculty of Agronomy. Graduates from the Animal Production field of study in academic year 1963 completed their distant form of study.

Construction of students dormitory in Kohoutova street in Brno began (1960 - 1965).

In 1961

Buildings of an old school in Židlochovice taken over in order to form the Institute of Postgraduate Studies at VŠZ. In 1986 complex reconstructed and in 1991 it was handed over to the village of Židlochovice.

In 1963

1st course of Scientific Programming in Agriculture was organized at VŠZ.

In 1964

Leisure centre of VŠZ was established in Skřinářov.

Complex of Pedagogical Institute in Jihlava taken over, constitution of branch in Jihlava for teaching first-year students from agricultural fields of study. Closed in 1994.

New field of study - Mechanisation of Agriculture was opened at the Faculty of Business and Economics. Closed in 1992, last graduates in academic year 1993/1994.

Department of Pedagogy instituted at VŠZ. Between 1971 - 1980 it was part of the Faculty of Agronomy. Between 1980 - 1990 it was a university department under the Rectorate. In 1990 transferred to the Faculty of Business and Economics and reorganized into Institute of Engineer Pedagogy. Since 1997 it has been incorporated into the Institute of Humanities.

Koleje a menzy VŠZ delegated to Ústřední správa kolejí a menz UJEP v Brně, as well as administration of dormitories and canteens of all universities in Brno (1964 - 1969).

Student magazines published at VŠZ. In 1969 discontinued.

Construction of research station Pícninářská stanice in Vatín (1964 -1971). In 1998 station was moved to a renovated complex.

In 1965

Mendeleum, Institute for Corn Research in Lednice na Moravě, was assigned to VŠZ administration. Construction of research centre focused on genetics and plant breeding. Since 1991 part of the Faculty of Horticulture.

Isotopic laboratory founded in 1959 was turned into Institute for Radioisotope Utilization at the Faculty of Agronomy. From 1979 known as Department of Nuclear Methods.

Horticulture specialization at the Faculty of Horticulture was reorganized into Horticulture field of study, including the following specializations: Horticulture Production, Ornmental Tree Planting and Landscping. Horticulture field of study officially approved in 1967.

Individual fields of study were gradually formed and independent departments constituted. Institute of Social Sciences formed out of Section of Countryside Sociology under the Department of Marxism and Leninism. In 1968 independent Department of Sociology was formed, dissolved in 1969.

Research centre of electron microscopy was established at the Faculty of Agronomy. In 1973 it became part of the Department of Sheep and Fur Animals Breeding.

In 1966

Construction of Chemical and Technological Pavilion, nowadays seat of the Faculty of Agronomy (building C). Completed in 1970.

Publishing centre was formed.

Pícninářské pracoviště in Radonín taken over, in 1973 withdrawn from VŠZ administration.

Driving school (building I) was established.

In 1967

Division of Scientific Information at VŠZ was constituted. Documentation Centre commenced its activities as part of the Central library, Laboratory of Reprography was being built; in 1975 reorganized into Institute for Scientific Information.

Publishing of Knižní a dokumentační zpravodaj Vysoké školy zemědělské v Brně commenced as a quarterly bibliography of research papers by university staff. Between 1978 - 1991 it was published under the name of Informační zpravodaj VŠZ. In 1992 ceased to be published.

University bulletine "Bulletin Vysoké školy zemědělské v Brně" first published; in 1970 terminated.

Development centre Středisko pro vývoj unikátních přístrojů formed out of Oddělení unikátních přístrojů. In 1981 renamed to Středisko přístrojové techniky. In 1996 dissolved.

Computing Centre at VŠZ was instituted; from 1968 known as Institute of Computer Technology. Beween 1961-1967 university made use of the computing station owned by the state enterprise Státní lesy in Lesnická street in Brno. In 1969 university had an automatic computer ZPA 600 installed.

Institute of Forest Ergonomics was established at the Faculty of Forestry; from 1971 part of the Department of Forest Exploitation and Timber Processing.

Testing room for agricultural and forest machines was built for the needs of the Mechanisation field of study at the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Computing centre Cellatron was set up at the Faculty of Business and Economics; in 1969 incorporated into the Department of Statistics and Mathematic Methods. In 1980 centre was upgraded and Cellatron computers replaced.

Arboretum and Botanical Garden in Brno - Černá Pole began to be formed instead of private garden plots (1968 - 1970). In 1975 administration building was completed.

In 1968

Research Centre for Plant Biology at the Faculty of Agronomy was established. Dissolved in 1971.

Research Centre for Farm Animal Biology and Biotechnology at the Faculty of Agronomy was established. Dissolved in 1971.

Department of Philosophy and Politology was constituted at VŠZ; dissolved in 1969.

VŠZ hosted meeting of  IUFRO (International Union of Forest Research Organizations) Council and its board and enlarged board.

Attempts to set up new faculties and to discover new forms of promoting the university fields of study.

August 1968. Academic year 1968/1969 commenced.

New specializations iwere ntroduced in the 3rd year of study at the Faculty of Forestry - Forestry in Developing Countries, and at the Faculty of Business and Economics - Business Economics in academic year 1968/1969. Both specializations were closed in academic year 1970/1971.

VŠZ students participated in the students strike against Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia; strike organized by Brněnské studentské centrum Svazu vysokoškolského studentstva Čech a Moravy (18 - 21 November 1968).

New department was constituted under the UNESCO IBP programme - International Biological Programme, from 1971 with the name of Institute for International Biological Programme; in relation to UNESCO - MaB project from 1976 known as the Institute of Forest Ecology. Between 1968 - 1971 it was an independent department; between 1971 - 1979 under the Department of Forest Botany and Phytocenology at the Faculty of Forestry; between 1980 - 1992 became an university scientific and educational division; since 1992 it has been part of the Faculty of Forestry.

New insignia of VŠZ were made - Rector's, Vice-Rectors' and Deans' chains on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the foundation of VŠZ. Commemorative medal issued in 1966 served as the model for the VŠZ emblem. 

Construction of experimental station for pigs and poultry farming in Drásov (1968 -1971).

In 1969

Central Administration Office for Dormitories and Canteens of VŠZ was established.

In 1969 public commemoration ceremony for Jan Palach was held on Svoboba Square in Brno attended by academic staff from all universities in Brno.

Academic community of VŠZ met on the occasion of naming the VŠZ dormitory in Kohoutova street unofficially to Jan Palach dormitory. Since 1970 the dormitory has had the name of J.A. Komenský dormitory. 

Arboretum Řícmanice was established at the suggestion of Dr. Ing. Jindřich Chmelař, DrSc, associate professor at VŠZ. Located instead of a closed forest tree nursery, containing Tree memorial and large forest clearing with exotic trees.

Construction of the extension of the building of the Faculty of Business and Economics in Zemědělská street no. 5 (building E) began. Completed in 1975 (1969 - 1975).

Veterinary Faculty withdrawn from VŠZ faculties, independent Veterinary University in Brno was restored.

Departments of Social Sciences at VŠZ dissolved.

In 1970

Institute of Marxism and Leninism was constituted at VŠZ (ÚML VŠZ). Dissolved in 1989.

Svaz socialistické mládeže na VŠZ (SSM) was established. SSM engaged in organizing student scientific and expert activities (SVOČ). Discontinued in 1989.

Laboratory for Orchid Production was constituted at the Faculty of Forestry; since 1970 run by the Arboretum and Botanical Garden administration board. Collections of orchids completed by Prof. Ing. Jaroslav Křístka and Prof. DrSc. ing. Jindra Dušek, CSc laid the foundation of the laboratory.

In 1971

Isotopic laboratory and office were founded (1971 - 1974).

Construction of Educational and research complex for hunters and gamekeepers in Lednice (1971 -1974). Complex run by the Department  of General and International Forestry and Gamekeeping.

Gymnasium was built in the complex of Taufer dormitory in Brno (1971 - 1975).

In 1972

Educational Film Office formed within the Department of Botany at the Faculty of Agronomy; later transformed into Institute of Educational and Scientific Cinema at VŠZ. In 1975 renamed to Laboratory of Research Film and Education Technology; in 1977 known as Institute of Educational Devices at VŠZ; since 1991 Audiovisual Centre at VŠZ.

In 1973

Reconstruction of educational and leisure centre of VŠZ in Karlov pod Pradědem (1973- 1976).

In 1974

Construction of P. Bezruč dormitory in Lednici commenced (1974- 1979). Reconstruction in 2002.

In 1975

Reprographic office at the Institute for Scientific Information commenced its activities.

Central Film and Video Library at the Laboratory of Research Film and Education Technology at VŠZ commenced its activities.

Extension of the chemical pavilion on the university premises (building D) was completed.

In 1976

Construction of greenhouses for the Faculty of Agronomy on the university premises.

In 1977

Construction of student canteen at the Taufer dormitory (1975 - 1976). Closed in 1997.

Construction of Biometeorological station in the complex of the Botanical Garden and Arboretum in Brno - Černá Pole (1977 - 1979).

Construction of lecture rooms and class rooms in the VŠZ complex in Brno - Pisárky.

In 1978

Computer of the 3 1/2 generation EC 1033 began operation under the Institute of Computer Technology at VŠZ.

New field of study was opened at the Faculty of Agronomy - Landscaping, orginating from the Ornamental Tree Planting and Landscaping field of study.

In 1979

Automated Management Systems at VŠZ division was formed; between 1982 - 1990 under the Institute of Computer Technology; since 1995 under the name of Department of Automated Information System.

Transformation of study completed; gradual transition from 5-year to 4-year study between 1978 - 1979.

Construction of Centre for Technical Services in the university complex (1979 - 1983). Building in Zemědělská street no. 3a became the seat of the Centre (building L).

In 1980

Building of block D of J.A. Komenský dormitory in Kohoutova street in Brno (1980 - 1985).

Microfiche line operation began at the Institute for Scientific Information at VŠZ.

Construction of specialized class rooms at the Faculty of Agronomy, Faculty of Forestry and Faculty of Business and Economics, equipped with the latest educational devices and instruments.

In 1981

Construction of educational and leisure centre of VŠZ in Svojanov (1981 - 1989).

In 1982

Acquisition of complex of kit homes in Podivín for VŠZ needs. Demolished in 1994.

In 1985

Faculty of Horticulture instituted at VŠZ seated in Lednice offering two fields of study - Horticulture and Landscaping. Insignia of the Faculty of Horticulture acquired (1986 - 1989).

Introduction of electronic devices at VŠZ, class rooms equipped with computer technology (1985 - 1989).

Department of Nuclear Methods at the Faculty of Agronomy accommodated the ESNA (The European Society of New Methods in Agricultural Research) secretariate.

Reconstruction and running of the Centre for Postgraduate Studies in Židlochovice. In 1991 buildings handed over to the village of Židlochovice.

In 1986

Construction of detached department of the Faculty of Forestry in Útěchov u Brna.

VŠZ engaged in the development of biotechnology in vegetable and livestock production.

In 1987

Research Institute Beskydy was established, a join department of the Faculty of Forestry and other scientific institutions. 

Gradual introduction of interdisciplinary and specialized studies at VŠZ between 1987- 1989 - Animal Breeding and Feed Management at the Faculty of Agronomy, Foliage Plant Growing, Nursery Management at the Faculty of Horticulture and Silviculture Mechnisation at the Faculty of Forestry. First graduates in 1988, last graduates in 1990. In academic year 1991/1992 specilizations were not opened any more.

Scientific association "Resistant" was founded with participation of the Faculty of Horticulture as a bearer of of scientific assignment.

In 1988

Computer EC 1027 was installed in the Institute of Computer Technology. Removed in 1993 when personal computers (PC) were being installed in all university departments.

5-year individual study for gifted students was opened at the Plant Production and Animal Production fields of study at the Faculty of Agronomy (1988 - 1989).

In 1989

Construction of the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Horticulture in Lednice (1989-1991).

November events in 1989 - Velvet Revolution at VŠZ; new institutions formed: student strike committee, academic boards at the faculties, and university academic board. Reorganization of management of the university, faculties, departments, Dean's advisory boards, Rector's advisory boards and academic councils of the faculties and the university.

Independent student magazine began to be published at VŠZ. Srike committee took over the CŠV SSM VŠZ magazine titled Bios. In 1990 newsletter MIMO published on an irregular basis. In 1991newsletter LISTÍ comes out on irregular basis; since 1992 journal MIMOLISTÍ has been published.

In 1990

4-year Master's study extended to 5 years. Plant Production field of study and the specializations Integrated Plant Protection and Plant Cultivation at the Faculty of Agronomy were terminated. Fishery specialization continued under the Animal Production field of study at the Faculty of Agronomy.

New field of study was opened at the Faculty of Forestry - Timber Engineering.

New field of study was opened at the Faculty of Agronomy - Ecological Machinery seated in Frýdek - Místek. Ústav ekologie průmyslové krajiny ČSAV in Ostrava was authorized to supervise the educational and organizational activities. In 1991 the field of study transferred under the Hornicko-geologická fakulta Vysoké školy báňské v Ostravě.

Postgraduate study of doctoral study programmes commenced (PhD.)

Construction of canteen in the complex of the Faculty of Horticulture in Lednice (1990 - 1993).

Building of greenhouses and laboratories for the Faculty of Agronomy  (1990 - 1993).

In 1991

Departments at faculties were renamed to institutes.

Faculty of Agronomy opened new Master's field of study - General Agriculture. Plant Production, Animal Production and Fishery fields of study continued. Newly opened Bachelor's field of study Exploitation and Protection of Land Resources changed its name to Land Arrangement, Exploitation and Protection of Land Resources in 1994.

Faculty of Horticulture introduced new field of study - Post-harvest Technology; in 1993 renamed to Processing of Horticultural Products. Landscape Architecture field of study continued. 

Faculty of Business and Economics launched new Master's fields of study - Management and Economics and Economic Informatics. Bachelor's field of study - Management and Economics introduced. Mechanisation in Agriculture field of study continued until 1994.

VŠZ got connected to a computer network through the computer EARN (European Academic nad Research Network) and BITNET at Masaryk University. In 1993 VŠZ connected its local computer network Novell to the international computer network INTERNET.

Student of VŠZ became Miss Czech Republic for 1991.

Rok 1992

The detached department of the Faculty of Agronomy seated in Jihlava opened the Master's field of study - Agroecology. In 1994 the detached department dissolved and the field of study transferred to Brno.

New Master's field of study was introduced at the Faculty of Agronomy - Processing of Agricultural Products. In 1994 replaced with the Food Processing field of study.

Study hall and reading room of the Institute for Scientific Information opened.

Státní zkušebna stavebně truhlářských výrobků in Zlín transferred under VŠZ administration and became its timber research department.

Building of the state enterprise Státní lesy under Podnik technického vývoje Olomouc, on Lesnická street in Brno was transferred under the VŠZ administration in order to help develop the Wood Technology and Timber Management field of study; reconstruction and furnishing of the building completed in 1996.

Nadace profesora Povolného foundation was constituted.

Club Green resumed its activities. It was founded in 1969 in the complex of the dormitory on Kohoutova street in Brno. The club is an independent division of the association Spolek posluchačů lesnické a dřevařské fakulty.

In 1993

Faculty of Forestry was renamed to the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology comprising two fields of study - Forest Engineering and Timber Engineering.

Mechanisation field of study at the Faculty of Business and Economics was transformed. Master's study of the Operation of Machinery field of study opened following its transfer from the Faculty of Business and Economics to the Faculty of Agronomy in 1995; since 1996 titled Operation of Machinery and Automobile Conveyance.

Establishment of the credit system in all study programmes at the Faculty of Business and Economics. Gradual introduction of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) in all study programmes and fields of study at the university.

University newsletter Zpravodaj Vysoké školy zemědělské v Brně began to be published, in 1995 changed its name to Zpravodaj MZLU v Brně. Publishing discontinued in 2000.

Impact of economic transformation on students. VŠZ students made a protest against unreasonable increase of accommodation fee at dormitories.

In 1994

Faculty of Agronomy opened new Master's field of study - Food Industry; in 1995 renamed to Food Technology.

Faculty of Agronomy opened new Bachelor's field of study - Land Arrangement, Protection and Exploitation of Land Resources.

Faculty of Agronomy opened new specialization - Plant Protection under the Plant Production field of study.

Faculty of Horticulture introduced new Bachelor's study of Horticulture.

Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology launched new Bachelor's study - Economy and Administration of Forest Management.

Faculty of Business and Economics opened new Bachelor's field of study - Economic Informatics.

Czech Association for Case Method Research and Application constituted at the Faculty of Business and Economics.

In 1995

University of Agriculture in Brno became Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry in Brno (MUAF). University comprised the following faculties: Faculty of Agronomy, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, Faculty of Business and Economics and Faculty of Horticulture.

New specialization opened at the Faculty of Agronomy - Land Arrangement and Landscape Engineering, and Nature Protection under the Agroecology field of study.

New Bachelor's field of study opened at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology - Economy and Administration of Forest Management.

New Bachelor's field of study introduced at the Faculty of Business and Economics - Management and Economy.

Collection of research papers Acta Universitatis agriculturae et silviculturae Mendelianae Brunensis began to be published. Collections published by the individual faculties discontinued.

Information and Consultation Centre of MUAF in Brno was founded. In 2002 terms of lifelong learning at MUAF in Brno and of University of 3rd Age were modified. Courses of lifelong learning were launched.

MUAF archive was established as a archive with effect for all university.

Nadace prof. Augustina Bayera foundation was instituted at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology.

Nadace prof. Václava Michla foundation was instituted at the Faculty of Agronomy.

In 1996

Faculty of Agronomy opened Master's field of study - Waste Management.

Faculty of Agronomy opened Bachelor's field of study - Operation of Machinery - bezpečnost práce technických systémů.

Under the Plant Production field of study the Faculty of Agronomy opened new specialization - šlechtění a semenářství. Under the Animal Production field of study new specializations opened - Feed Science, Genetics and Animal Breeding. Under the Operation of Machinery and Automobile Conveyance field of study new specialization opened - komerční služby v technice.

New tracks opened under the Forest Engineering field of study at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology: všeobecné lesní inženýrství, biotechnické stavby v krajině, podnikání v lesnictví, myslivost a životní prostředí zvěře, lesnická politika a světové lesnictví. New track územní plánování a správa was introduced, since 1997 under the name of péče o přírodu, krajinu a územní plánování.

New tracks opened under the Timber Engineering field of study at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology: základní zpracování dřeva, výroba nábytku a speciálních výrobků ze dřeva, design nábytku, dřevostavby a dřevěné prvky staveb.

First year of postgraduate distant form of study of geographic information systems (UNIGIS) was opened at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology.

Laboratory of Molecular Embryology was opened at the Faculty of Agronomy, a shared laboratory of Institute of Experimental Medicine of the Academy of Sciences of CR and MUAF. Since 2000 it has been in keeping of Centrum buněčné terapie a tkáňových náhrad 2. Lékařské fakulty Univerzity Karlovy.

Biometric laboratory was opened at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology.

New canteen was completed in the complex of the university (building O).

Wood processing pavilion was opened (building T).

Humanitas hortorum Foundation was established at the Faculty of Horticulture.

In 1997

New Master's and Bachelor's field of study was opened at the Faculty of Business and Economics - Finance

New Master's field of study was opened at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology - Landscape Engineering.

New Bachelor's field of study was opened at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology - Hospodářsko správní činnost v dřevozpracujícím průmyslu.

Information Centre at MUAF, phase 2 was opened.

Reconstruction of the seat of the Faculty of Business and Economics in Brno on Zemědělská street no. 5, building E (1997-1998).

New insignia of the Faculty of Business and Economics were acquired on the occassion of the 40th anniversary of establishing the Faculty (1997 - 1999).

Reconstruction of the Botanical Garden and Arboretum was completed and construction of a new administrative building commenced.

Regional centre IDRISI (IDRISI Resource Center) was founded in order to process stereometric data at the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammery of the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology.

In 1998

New Master's field of study was opened at the Faculty of Agronomy - Waste Management.

New specialization was introduced under the Operation of Machinery and Automobile Conveyance field of study at the Faculty of Agronomy - Komerční služby v technice.

New tracks were opened under the Landscape Engineering field of study at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology: Landscape Management, Biotechnické péče o krajinu .

New specialization was opened under the Management and Economy field of study at the Faculty of Business and Economics - Evropská studia v podnikání a ekonomice.

Pavilion of the Food Technology field of study opened at the Faculty of Agronomy in the university complex in Černá Pole (building N).

In 1999

New field of study was introduced at the Faculty of Business and Economics - Agriculture and Food Industry.

New specialization was introduced under the Operation of Machinery and Automobile Conveyance field of study at the Faculty of Agronomy - Mechanisation in Agriculture.

Reconstruction of the Chemical and Technological Pavilion, seat of the Faculty of Agronomy (building C).

Two new pavilions were opened in the university complex - Pavilion of Agricultural Machinery and Pavilion of Timber Technology ( bulding P, building R).

Laboratory of Molecular Genetics was established at the Institute for Plant Growing and Cultivation of the Faculty of Agronomy. 

In 2000

New Bachelor's field of study was opened at the Faculty of Agronomy - Food Production and Distribution.

New specializations were opened at the Faculty of Horticulture: Processing of Horticultural Products, Vegetable Science, Floriculture, Fruit Growing, Management of Nurseries.

New Bachelor's fields of study were opened at the Faculty of Business and Economics: Finance, Public Administration.

In co-operation with the Nottingham Trent University and the Brno International Business School, the Faculty of Business and Economics opened the first year of British university programmes. 

Consultation and Advisory Centre was opened under the advisory system of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Laboratory of Applied Molecular Genetics (LAMGen) was opened at the Institute of Genetics of the Faculty of Agronomy.

Information Centre, phase 3, was opened.

New chemical laboratories were opened (building D).

Overcrossing was opened.

In 2001

New fields of study were opened at the Faculty of Business and Economics: Social Economy and Management of Trade Operations.

Školní zemědělský podnik Lednice and Školní zemědělský podnik  Žabčice merged to form a single Školní zemědělský podnik Žabčice.

Research centre Gene Bank in Lednice was completed.

Reconstruction of the main building of the university, Zemědělská street no. 1 ( building A).

Construction of building for Ústav základů techniky a automobilové dopravy of the Faculty of Agronomy (building J). Original hall and building I were demolished.

In 2002

New apiary was built.

Construction of complex of specialized educational halls began(building Q).

Reconstruction of the seat of the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology (building B) began.

New Bachelor's study programme Landscape Architecture consisting of Management zahradních a krajinářských úprav and Zahradní a krajinářská architektura fields of study was introduced at the Faculty of Horticulture.

New Bachelor's study programme Horticultural Engineering consisting of Horticulture and Processing of Horticultural Products fields of study was introduced at the Faculty of Horticulture.
